Home Schooling

The coordination of the home schooling for our son has been the easiest part of the trips planning process. The library has a lot of good resources and our neighbor, Laura was an invaluable resource since she home schools her 4 girls.

For me the first step in home schooling was the realization that our child's school wants no part in this process. I suppose the loss of tax dollars is the reason for this. However, they did guide me to the county school board who requests that you complete an application. This form is a formality in which you guarantee that your child will receive the requisite 900 hours of schooling required by law and that their work will be reviewed by a certified teacher to ensure that they have progressed as needed. You can also choose to have them tested for proficiency to qualify your child for their annual audit.

We will also be coordinating a travel review for Andrew's (AD's) class with his computer teacher Mr. Medapati. I purchased a world map for them to follow our travels and they will use this web site to follow AD's adventures. His component of the web site will be another part of his education - teaching!

We figure that a tour of the world should provide 900 hours of education! Alas, they must also learn the other basics -- math, writing, American history, etc. For this I received a couple great texts from another friend (Mike Blake) and had them reviewed by a 5th grade teacher who is the sister of one our friends. I also used a wonderful educational store called Holcomb's (go there - it's fabulous). So now we have the tools required and all we need is the stamina. Fortunately for us AD is a good student who has a strong educational background.

We have decided to work on reading, studying and quizzes while we are traveling from place to place. Our thought on this is that actual travel time provides a sequestered and often boring time in which to complete these assignments. Tom (TD) and I often read novels and tour guides as we fly, bus or train it from place to place. I have also purchased the 5th grade quiz game by Brain Quest.  (AD enjoys beating me at it.) We will also complete routine studying that will be established when we get going and figure out how this can best be accomplished. Mornings are good times for me and TD is good at night so we will rotate the education process and get the job done.

Look for AD's insights on this web site to follow his learning processes.

Other Places to Look

There are many RTW travel journals online. All you have to do is make a search for “RTW+journals”. Most are probably better written. We’ll try to do our best to keep you interested.
