Medical PrecautionsJust call me a “human pincushion”. An appointment at my Doctor directed me to the Toledo/Lucas County Health Department for shots. I had sent my Doctor a list of the countries we would be visiting. At the appointment he had a folder with all the recommended vaccinations needed for them. It was a half an inch thick. I knew I was in trouble! Dr. Paat went country-by-country with me, suggesting a very conservative regime which we modified to our accurate needs. A number of countries had high-risk areas, which we wouldn’t be visiting. After consulting with the nurse at the Travelers Bureau and with a friend in Australia, we settled on Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Polio and Hepatitis A & B. I’m the only one that needed them all. Fortunately Andrew only needs Yellow Fever & Typhoid. Since the Hepatitis shots have to be 30 days apart, I got started first. Needles are certainly much less painful than what we suffered with as children. Now all you have to suffer with are the reactions to the live vaccine. Our Doctor had encouraged us to get Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis shots. We felt that we weren’t going to be at risk. We got prescriptions for Malarone (malaria), an antibiotic, and diamox for high altitude sickness. I feel that we will be able to supply a pharmacy with all the supplies. Of course we will have first aid supplies, sunscreens, and other health & beauty aids. My vaccinations cost $230 and the prescription medicines about $100. I don’t want to know how much the drug benefit card saved us! We’ve scheduled the medical part of our planning too close to departure. This should have been taken care a few months before departure. |
