Dec 6th - Surfing in Wahia
The word of the day is "surfing". At 9 AM
we were across the street at the surf club meeting AD's surf
instructor Trevor. His first question to AD was "Are you
wearing sun screen? ". This is something that we are all
diligent about due to the suns strong rays, so the answer was
"Yes".
Trevor began his lesson with a lecture on basic skills. AD and
I learned about the wind, the waves, effects currents and
riptides. He reviewed the need to find a marker on land to
keep yourself in a safe zone as the currents and riptides tend
to pull you away and out. It was very interesting.
I loved watching AD paddle his board into the surf and
practice standing. He did very well and was even able to get
some practice turning the board in different directions.
Trevor was pleased that AD was able to make the moves.
Snowboarding skills were transferred to the surfboard. I was
surprised at how small waves could propel the board.
We
had to drive into Waihi to return the DVD rental and transfer
the journals to JW on the internet. Waihi is small enough the
you use the one computer terminal at the library or one
computer at a restaurant. It cost $10 hr/NZ to use the
computer but it was fast. We bought some more groceries and
headed back to the beach. AD played on the trampoline with
some other kids. Then we went swimming and played in the surf.
The waves were much bigger than this morning. Lots of people
were in the water playing along with us.
The day was nice and relaxing. One more time in the waves
before supper. We had a delicious dinner of fish and mashed
potatoes.

Today
I took a 1 hour surf lesson with a guy named Trevor. The
first thing that we did was to learn basic skills. He
taught me about waves, currents and riptides. I learned
how to go from laying on the board to standing on the
board. Then we were out in the water practicing how to
stand and ride the waves. Next I learned how to turn the
board. It was really hard to turn but it was really a
lot of fun and I can't wait to go again.
