Itinerary - New Zealand, South Island
Nov. 20th -26th
The ferry ride is 3 hours from Wellington
to Picton. We drove along the west coast of the South
Island to Haast. We found a cabin on the
coast and spent 5 nights.
Nov. 20
Taking the ferry across the sound to Picton
on the south island, takes about 2 hours. We drove an hour
northwest to Havelock to visit a friend of a friend. The sand
flies drove us away from the area.
Nov. 21 - 23
Headed south along the eastern coast to
Kaikoura. Whale and seal watching is available. Snow capped
mountains overlook the beautiful coastline. Traveled via
Christchurch into the southern alps. Spent night at Fairlie, a
small town.
Nov. 24 - 26
Drove by Mt. Cook, the highest peak in New
Zealand. Settled into a Top 10 Holiday Park in Wanaka. Lots of
outdoor activities available in the area. Beautiful alpine
lake. Drove into the mountains following a river, through farm
paddocks until we arrived at the base of Mt. Aspiring. Rented
Kayaks to paddle on the lake in Wanaka. Spent half a day horse
back ride in Wanaka
Nov. 27 - 29
Drove through Arrowtown, a gold rush town
on way to Queenstown. Walked around “tourist central”
(Queenstown) for New Zealand. It is in the middle of the south.
It is the adventure capital of New Zealand. Every type of
outdoor activity should be available there. AD wanted to
whitewater raft again and horse back ride.
Then we drove from Queenstown to Dunedin, a
lovely university city. We spent the days walking around the
city, drove out on the peninsula and visited an Albatross
center, and did hiking.
