Itinerary - New Zealand
Nov. 11-12th
Our time in New Zealand lasted until Dec.
9th when we flew to Cairns in Australia. We arrived in NZ without any
reservations and schedules. A woman at the Auckland airport
suggested that our first week be spent in the North Island.
Weeks 2 & 3 will be on the South Island. She helped us with
arrangements for a rental vehicle on both islands. The car is
left in Wellington where a ferry takes you to the other
island.
Nov. 13 -15th
First stop Rotarua, the hot springs capitol of the world.
It is located on the North Island about a 2 hour drive
southeast of Auckland. Rotarua was used as a base to do day
trips.
After the Rotorua area we drove along the Bay of Plenty on the
east coast, spending nights in Whatatane, Gisborne and Napier.
The last night on the North Island was in Wellington.
We stopped at Waitomo Caves known for their green glow worms. There are 100's of miles of coast to follow, gardens and
nature sanctuaries to walk through, and some body
surfing to practice. It is Spring in the southern hemisphere.
The flowers are in full bloom but it is not very warm.
Nov. 16
Following the eastern coast line down the
north island to Gisbourne, situated on the Pacific Ocean.
Beautiful beaches and swimming center.
Nov. 17-18
Napier’s claim to fame is their beautiful
Art Deco buildings. One of the largest concentrations anywhere
in the world.
Nov 19
Wellington is New Zealand’s capitol and is
located at the southern most tip of the north island.
