March 23rd, Tuesday - Strike, Strike, Strike, by DW
The word for the day is “discourteous”. Our
flight here showed us once again how discourteous people can
be. As we are waiting in line to check in at the ticket
counter people are cutting in front of the line. Literally
pushing people out of the way and handing their ticket to the
agent at the counter, who does nothing and seems oblivious to
the whole thing. This happened more than once before TD
started making loud comments, to no avail.
When we boarded the plane we found that the assigned seats
were just a number and there were no assigned seats. Luckily
there were two together since some of the men chose to sit in
the middle of a three seat row. Landing after an uneventful
flight the passengers unbuckle while we are still taxiing on
the runway and begin to get their bags down. Then the run to
the door begins. You have never seen anything like it in your
life. Once again people are pushing and using their large
carry-on bags to muscle their way ahead. The man beside me
actually crawled over me, shoved the man and AD who are at the
end of our row to grab his large briefcase. He then tries to
muscle his way forward. TD puffed himself up and didn’t let
him get by. The amazing thing in my opinion is that many of
the native passengers are all doing the same thing.
We thought we had left the political movements against the
government behind in Nepal, but found all the stores closed in
Cochin for a strike against a raise in taxes. The city is fair
in size and looks fairly prosperous, but left us with little
to do with everything closed. After a short walk around our
area looking for a restaurant and finding nothing open we went
back to the hotel for lunch, homework and then a trip to the
pool. The pool is actually in the hotel next to ours and is
located on the sixth floor. Being up in the air provides a
lovely breeze and the temperatures here do not seem as
sweltering as those in Goa.
After our swim AD requested Domino’s Pizza for dinner, so we
hailed a tut-tut and went the few blocks over to it. We
ordered our usual pizza, usual for Asia that is. It had spicy
chicken, black olives and cheese on it. But per our usual
luck, we got the spicy chicken, hot
pepper and black olive pizza. TD and I braved it,
though the pizza was too hot for AD. He ordered a plain cheese
and black olive pizza. On the way home we found an internet
place and went in for a quick view of our mail. Then it was
back to the hotel for the movie Total Recall featuring
my beau Arnold Swartzenager. Boy was he young looking when
that was made!.
