India 2
India
easily invokes love and hate. DW & I can both express a little
sadness as our time in the country nears the end. The worst of
our times were by ill health and the awful heat. We feel great
now though and just loved the days at Kovalam Beach. It is a
wonderful place with fantastic surf.
I came to India not being a fan of Indian
food. While I get tired of it 3 meals a day, I can say that
“most of it has been delicious”. We’ve eaten a lot of
vegetarian meals which have been better than ones with meat.
It’s impossible to complain about fresh fish and seafood. We
would recommend Kerala to anyone coming to visit India.
It doesn’t seem possible that we have been traveling for more
than seven months. I wondered if we would stick it out a
number of times. Only our family heard about the really bad
times when we wondered what we were going to do with Andrew.
He’s now talking about getting a world map for his room to
place pins in for where he’s been.
I think we all feel that the next three
months in Europe will go very fast and be lots easier (while
much more expensive) than Asia has been. It’s really the only
place where our devalued dollar buys anything. Only time will
tell.

India 1
Our time in India has been as challenging
as we expected. We expected to get sick and did. It’s lasted
longer than we would have hoped. Not feeling well and 100F
temperatures, forced us to spend most of our time in Goa in
A/C. Whenever we tried outside activity , we felt worse.
Fortunately on our last day we felt better and enjoyed a few
hours on the beach. Goa is not what I expected. I guess I
thought it was going to be like Bali. It’s not. Goa is made up
of many small villages along the coast. There are a few large
5 star resorts but mostly smaller places. Most tourists come
from Russia. They have changed the flavor of Goa for the
worse. The Goans all complain about them.
After a few days in Delhi, we drove to what is probably the
most beautiful building ever constructed, the Taj Mahal. It
was a quick overnight trip but worth the pain of travel. Next
we flew to Varanasi, the holiest city in the Hindu faith.
Varanasi is light years behind Delhi. The state government is
one of the most corrupt in India. It is a shocking place that
needs to be experienced to be understood. Where else on earth
is power only turned on for a few hours a day? The road
journeys turned more of our hairs white. It was on our last
day in Varanasi that we got sick. How anyone who lives there
can be healthy is beyond our imagination
