The Highlands Tour
Sept. 17th - To 11,500 Feet
A travel day for us. We caught breakfast
with the woman at the stall before catching the bus to the
airport. Lots of down time in a day like this. The flight to
Quito was the same as coming. Our guide, Diego, met us at the
airport. We really didn’t know what we had bought when we
booked the inland Ecuador trip. Diego is going to be our
personal guide and driver the whole time. We climbed out of
Quito through Cumbaya into the mountains. The landscape is
very arid until we get to 12,000 ft when we are in the clouds.
The highest pass was at 12,500. There was a surprising amount
of traffic, mostly tanker trucks. Our decent brought us to
11,500 for the night in Papallacta.
There are thermal springs in this part of
the mountains and we stayed in a beautiful hotel which had
pools in the courtyards. It is one of the prettiest places
I’ve seen. The water had different areas of temperature you
could soak in. None of us felt very well because we had
traveled from sea level to rest at 11,500. I wish I could say
that “the sleep matched the location” but we all had a
terrible night’s sleep.
