Paris, France
April 1st and 2nd, Thursday & Friday, Travel to Paris - by
DW
The word for the day is “entertainment”.
Travel days are always ones filled with the need for various
modes of entertainment. We left Kerala at 1:00 pm after a
morning of swimming and sunning. Our first segment of flights
arrived in Delhi at 8:00 that night. Air India’s hub is in
Mubai and we ended up with a 1 hour layover due to mechanical
problems. It actually looked to us like they had combined two
flights due to low passenger counts. We spent our time doing
homework, playing cards and reading.
The next leg of our journey continued at 2:00 am. I guess we
were lucky to have a 6 hour respite between travel times. By
the time we got to the hotel and repacked the big bag we had
left behind, with our new purchases, it was 9:30 pm and time
for a short sleep. The 1:30 wake up call came all too quickly
and we were on the road again. This time we were flying Air
Emirates. They are the best airline that we have ever flown!
Not only do they have new planes with great entertainment but
they have delicious food and friendly service.
Each seat has it’s own TV monitor located on the seat in front
of you. They had twelve different movies and lots of computer
games to play. The flight wasn’t full so TD moved to a three
person row all to himself and AD and I occupied a four person
row. We flew from Delhi to Dubai in just over three hours and
then had a 45 minute layover that barely allows you time to
pee, let alone shop for duty free goodies. The next leg of our
travels lasted greater than 7 hours and when coupled with the
3 ½ hour time change we arrived in Paris at 1:30 pm. Having
the movies and the games to play is fabulous. The time went by
without a hitch.
After checking our transportation options, we decided to take
the luxury of a taxi to get to the Orange La Fayette Hotel. It
ended up being much closer to the Opera than we expected and
is only 4 blocks from our last Paris hotel. It’s just down the
street! We settled into our room before heading out to see the
neighborhood. There’s an internet place a few block down Rue
La Fayette but it’s so smoky that we hope to find a new one.
The main problem with smoke (other than it stinks) is that it
stinks up our limited number of clothes. We walked around
looking for the Kettinger’s hotel and were very pleased to
find it is only a block away, which is closer than it appeared
on the web page.
Paris is so much fun to just wander around, so we walked down
to the Opera and window shopped. AD isn’t a shopper so he kept
us moving. There’s only MTV and CNN in English on cable, so TV
isn’t a draw back to the room. We did go back to rest and
drink some Merlot before going out to get Chinese for dinner.
Exhaustion soon set in early, but we needed to be on Paris
time so we stayed awake until 9 pm before going to bed.
