Valle de la Luna, Chile
Oct. 25th - Drive through the salt flats, by DW
The word for the day is "beige". After
spending the night in a closet, which was actually ok as long
as only one of us was out of bed. We went on a car trip to the
Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) and to a village called Toconao in the
salt flats. Three hours later, after driving through the
desert we had seen nothing new. Sand, sand and more sand, with
a few rocks thrown in at the valley of the moon and a few
trees with a white bell tower in the village.
So we packed some snacks and headed to the
community pool. The sun is scorching, the water is cold and
there is a constant breeze with an occasional dust storm
arising. We are enjoying seeing the dust whirlwinds in the
distance that have at times been one block long. The view of
the tornado like clouds is really wild. Unlike the view of the
bikini clad overweight swimmers that continue to inhabit this
country. We laughed uproariously, in our closet, when I turned
my bra and undies into a make shift string bikini. Where is
the picture of that???
During the late afternoon we toured the
Museo de Arqueologico which has many relics of the area. The
most interesting was a mummy nicknamed "Miss Chile". She is in
great condition, bound in a fetal position with head bent down
and thick long black hair. They also had an exhibit of scull
malformations that was quite fascinating.
We are enjoying delicious meals in San
Pedro and returned to Cafe Export for dinner again tonight. AD
is very pleased with their food and was more adventuresome
ordering a chicken empanada. It was huge and wonderfully
flavorful. Fortunately, we remembered to order only two meals
and had just enough food. AD is also trying out every Danky
(ice cream drumsticks) that are made. He really likes the
chocolate/strawberry blend ones the best. The bottom of the
cones have fudge and nuts in them. Sounds like an inherited
trait to me!!
