Itinerary - Chile
Oct. 15th
Taxi from Tacna to Arica, Chile. Rental car to Putre -- a
little over 2 hours. We climb from the sea to 3500 meters.
Oct 17th to 20th
We will stay at the Azapa Inn, Arica on the night of the
17th for 3 nights before heading south along the coast.
Oct 20th
We will drive along Rt 5 to Iquique, Chile,
a fair size city on the coast in the El Norte Grande of Chile.
There is a beautiful wide beach lined with hotels. We don't
have a reservation but we will find a hotel when we get there.
Along the way we will stop and see more Geoglyphs and a number
of ghost towns which dot the Norte.
Oct 21st to 23rd
Iquique is famous here for shopping. Not
that we need anything more than a small cutting board! We've
collected a paring knife and vegetable peeler so far on the
trip. Vegetables and fruit are plentiful but never at
restaurants, so we supplement our diet.
From Iquique (pronounced E key kay)
we will do day trips to visit the numerous nitrate ghost
towns, especially to Humberstone, a huge ghost town. The
collapse of the nitrate industry left many abandoned towns to
explore. We also want to find a mudbath/hot springs village.
